What's Catching our Eye

70s-Style Robot Anime GEPPY-X

Thursday, July 16 - PC, Xbox Series, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch (Switch 2-compatible)

This crazy-looking game is a re-make of a PS1 game that only found its release in Japan. When it came out, it spanned across four discs with about 8,000 hand-drawn cells of a fictional (titular) 70s-style anime. Those cells have been re-scanned for that extra remastered Touch of Excellence™.

Beyond that, this looks like a pretty neat 2D shooter, so if you're in a Saturday morning Anime-and-Arcade kind of mood, this might be up your alley. It comes out on practically everything on Thursday, with a demo out now.

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit

Thursday, July 16 - PC, Xbox Series, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2

The morbid-cross-cozy simulator trend continues this week (after last week's Moonlight Peaks). This time, a sequel to 2021's Cozy Grove. This game originally released on mobile via Netflix last year, and this is its console debut. In this life sim, you'll help "ghostly bears find peace" in the game's eerie-cute camping island.

A demo is also available now on Steam.

Fogpiercer

Saturday, July 18 - PC/Linux

Fogpiercer looks like an interesting strategy deckbuilder where you're constructing a locomotive to fight bandits, working your way through a sci-fi world. You'll build your deck to avoid environmental hazards, upgrading your weapons and repairing your train as the scenario allows. It's got an action points-based combat system where strategic placement of your weapons, defences and attacks will spell success or tragedy for your voyage.

It comes out this weekend, with a demo out now.

Ascend to ZERO

Monday, July 13 - PC, Xbox Series - available on Xbox Game Pass

This game looks like an interesting bullet-heaven roguelike with time-manipulation mechanics and a unique techno-anime visual style. Each run will have you upgrading your build with chip implants and weapon upgrades, and as to be expected, there's some meta-progression to keep you grinding run after run.

It's out today, and it's also out on Game Pass on Day One. If you're a subscriber, there's no reason not to check this one out. I might cover this sometime this week with a Blind Date episode.

Better with Friends

The Mound: Omen of Cthulu

Wednesday, July 15 - PC, Xbox Series, PS5

In this Lovecraftian four-player horror co-op, you and your friends will take on the role of 16th-century explorers signing on contracts to steal as much treasure as you can for your captain, retracing the steps of explorers before you that have quite possibly met a gruesome demise, working together to defeat creepy enemies while trying not to rouse the suspicions of the entities on the island, or going mad (this wouldn't be a Cthulu game without a madness mechanic, after all).

If you're a Lovecraft fan, this looks like an interesting twist on the Vermintide/Darktide formula, with some interesting spatial voice chat mechanics sprinkled in. It's also developed by the Chilean-based indie studio famous for their Zeno Clash series.

Heave Ho 2

Friday, July 17 - PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2

This sequel to 2019's couch co-op hit Heave Ho by French studio Le Cartel brings the physics-based party game online with a versus mode. In this game you use your hands to yeet yourself and your friends across levels to get to the end. It's the kind of co-op energy that has the potential to break friendships, so make sure you're tight with your mates before picking this one up (or don't, your mileage may vary).

It's $10 on the Nintendo eShop, and presumably will be the same on PC. A demo is also out now on Steam.
